Psycho power window - a final (I hope) follow-up

The saga began when ...

I asked for some advice in December 2003 under the subject "Power Window with a mind of its own wants to open by itself - 89 900 Aero/SPG" and received lots of useful advice from exorcism to cleaning the switch. I cleaned the switch (and swore at it a few times) and the problem went away for a while. A few months later we went into cooler weather when the window demon seems to hibernate and things were quiet until we got back into warm weather when the demon awoke again.

I cleaned the switch again and it made no difference. I phoned my service place and was advised that I could get a new or working second hand switch. Feeling safe, I decided to modify the switch to disable the auto-down feature. That seems to do the job, I thought, but no, as soon as it got warm again, down she goes.

I was sure that I heard a click, like a relay shutting off, just before the window stopped trying to wind down. But my service place ensures me that there's no relay in the circuit. I was planning to pull the trim off the door to have a look inside, but didn't get a round tuit.

Finally, service time again and I persuaded them to pull the trim off. Guess what :-) There's a small item on the invoice to replace a relay. The foreman (who has been working on Saabs for 20 years) said, blushing, "I didn't know there was a relay in there".

Vindication!!!

I'll be driving up north at Christmas, so that should give it a test in hot, humid weather. Fingers crossed :-)

There's a timer relayon the floor under the back seat (left side) that takes care of the auto function.

They aren't demons, they are trolls. And in the warmer weather, if they don't get kept cool by Aircon, they open the windows.

Trust me on this, keeping the trolls busy on annoying little niggles is a good thing. Otherwise, with idle hands, they may find something bigger to annoy you with.

Seriously though, glad you got it sorted. Saab 900 windows can be a PITA, but when they work, they are fantastic.

I had a C900 with manual windows - I wish I could get manuals windows today. No issues with switches, relays, wires etc. I got really strange looks when a passenger was trying to lower the window. They could not find the switch and when I pointed out the window crank . . .

He he - my 1985 900i has manual windows. My 1983 900S only has power windows in the front doors. They work on but both of the window motors probably need attention. Doors are one of the next few things on my 'big service list' of things to look at up to end of this year.
