My girlfriends 96 saturn sl1 has a growling noise when making a right hand turn & when driving straight down the road. The noise stops when steered to the left. Anyone have any experience with this problem?

Rotor probably ... possibly wheel bearing
Have your mechanic check the engine mount. Mine did the exact same thing (sounded like a CV joint or bad axle)...except only when turning left. A bad engine mount means your engine is vibrating against the car's frame.
You can trouble shoot this in a WIDE OPEN PARKING LOT by shutting off the engine while the car is rolling (keep the key turned so the steering doesn't lock up) Get your car moving at, say, 20 mph, shut the engine off and turn right. If the noise is still there, then it's likely NOT the engine, and might be an axle or bearing.
But don't run into anything while you're testing this.
