can someone tell me what these are worth these days? I picked one up for cheap at SB thinking I'd just clean it, reseal it, and then decide whether or not I was going to use it on my '55. Well it turns out that someone got fairly aggressive with the top end of the shaft; it's been ground down it looks like although it looks like it will still fully engage the nut; also someone drilled two holes between the shaft and the steering wheel (apparently trying to get the wheel off?) so there's two thin spots on the shaft. I know that if I can find a NOS shaft/cam it will be somewhat expensive, just wondering at what point is it a stupid idea?
The sad thing is, other than the tar-like gear oil and external coating of grime, the rest of the box looks near-new, the bearings show zero wear on them.
I figured I'd be OK buying this setup because I could sell the steering wheel to the Schrocks as a core, well it is screwed, I wouldn't try to pass it on to them as messed up as it is, and I figured having an extra turn signal switch would be good, well it was missing... only thing I got that is usable is a 3-speed shift tube and levers, which I already had :( and of course the jacket which is the same for all manual steering cars... guess you win some and you lose some...
This is, of course, the rare and desirable Saginaw manual steering box for a C-K which doesn't wear out and get sloppy like the Ross cam and lever boxes...
thanks,
nate
