A lot easier to send it off to the Babbitt Pot..... Just seeing if anyone had any more 'local' favorites. Studebaker George Hmmm. I do have a friend that melts down all his old tire weights and casts his fishing sinkers...

Nothing wrong with that... I still have my dad's sinker molds... It was a winter tradition to melt lead (in the 1 car garage/shop we had in Illinois) and make sinkers. Today I think back on the effects lead fumes have on children...hmmmmm? We used to fish in the rip-rap fill my the channel marker lights for the lake freighters in the St. Mary's river in the UP. The current meant you needed a good sized sinker. With three munchkins and smart Rock BAss, we were forever getting snagged. My dad used to put our sinkers on with rubber bands. He used to say he saved about 50% of the snelled hooks that way. While strange.. Those are some of the best memories a kid could have... Sneakin' down the edge of an underwater rock...feeling the edge and dropping over it... Nibble/tug...Nibble tug...WHAM! Got him! Jeff

Try contacting Egge Machine. They do re-babbiting and will cast new pistons, etc., for impossible to get vintage applications.

Thanks, there are many out there but I was hoping that someone had some first hand experience with them. I sent some to Babbitt Pot long ago and their service was top notch so maybe they will get the nod. There don't seem to be any close to me (N. FL). Jeffy, my buddy is now casting his own 'leadheads' and then painting them for fishing off the flats here. He is getting pretty good at doing them! Having grown up on the water (rivers and the Gulf of Mexico) I have a gazillion fishing memories...and many memories of patching together old outboards...learning as I went and getting lessons from some of the 'old timers'. George, too bad you are not up here in North east...we are still pouring in the garage,I was taught by my father in 1974....we are now using DZL rather then the old regular babbitt.A set of mains was just completed for a 1928 Packard 8 roadster.As for the dangers, Dad used a glove made from abestos, handmade..still have it, still use it.....try the DZL next time you pour....Egges is the best ,using them since my father started with the old man Nels Egge, now I work with this son...The SOB in New England.....21 sp six tourer and lots of Pres 8 snipped-for-privacy@maine.rr.com
