I have to use Google now, and the posts seem to stay forever.
I notice at the top of Shiv's posts, "Note: The author of this message requested that it not be archived. This message will be removed from Groups in 4 days (Apr 12, 8:07 pm)." Maybe that's the deal.

Generally one can go into "properties" and set the number of days at which messages will be deleted
