Since it's brand new, why not ask the dealer? If your dealer doesn't give you a good answer, you could take it to either another dealer or an independant shop that specialized in Suburu and ask their opinion.
You didn't mention your gas milage. If you're leaking raw gas out the tail pipe (not likely, if the catalytic converter is working at all), I suspect your MPG will be suffering.

Normal. ECU richens mixture for cold starting so you will smell unburnt gas immediately on start-up... a little goes a long way....................... and the 'steam' is water vapour, a product of combustion always there but more noticeable in cold weather and will go when the engine/ exhaust reaches operating temperature. Mine does it...don't lose sleep.

Normal...if starting from cold and I've never owned a car that didn't do the same. ECU richens mixture for cold starting so you get a little unburnt fuel at first blown out the exhaust...and the 'steam' is water vapour, a combustion product...again normal and always there but noticeable in cold weather. It disappears when correct operating temperature is reached. If in doubt consult dealer.

Weird...first post fell off my screen and not in sent items. Please pardon duplication.
are u sure?
yes, it goes away after 45 secs, and then fainted... the steam also reduced, and after driving a bit, I smell the exhaust pipe, and nothing can be smelled.
so u sure it's normal? I just don't want to be look dork/stupid if I give it back to dealer.
I agree - cold engines do what they have to in order to start and warm up, and that involves richness. As long as it's okay after warmup you are good to go.
I ran through the chemistry of burning gasoline once and it's true: burning a gallon of gasoline produces almost exactly a gallon of water as steam! It seems wrong because a gallon of gasoline only weighs about 6 lbs while a gallon of water weighs a smidge over 8 lbs, but that's what adding oxygen does to it.

He shouldn't _ever_ be able to smell raw fuel, if the cats are present and working.
Hi,
Don't know how sensitive his nose is, but cats DO take a minute or so to heat up, and I've smelled "very rich" exhaust from several of my cars at startup when they're "cold" (I'm thinking below 40 deg F which is barely "cool" to some of the folks here--don't recall if the OP said how cold it is where he's located.) Considering I can't smell for beans, it's likely they could have smelled like raw fuel to someone with a good nose.
