Litltle floor mat hook thingy question

I took my floor mats out of my 2000 Outback and the "little floor mat hook thingy" on my 05 Outback does not line up with the old floor mat. Can it be taken out temporarily?

Should have mentioned that they are the heavy rubber winter mats.
