New Tires for 2000 Subaru Legacy

Hello everyone,

I have a 2000 Subaru Legacy wagon, it is my very first car and it needs new tires. I've never bought tires before and no one in my family is particularly mechanical, so I need some help. So far what have been recommended to me by different mechanics are Goodyear Assurance Triple Tread and Yokohama AVID TRZ, I've been trying to do my homework and figure out which will work best for my car, but I've found mixed reviews of both. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Also, I live in Wisconsin, should I be using winter tires?

Thanks,

Rebecca B.

You can try Michelin's Hydroedge. It's a little bit pricier than other tires, but they have long life. Check out

for reviews.

I like going to Costco for new tires. They offer lifetime rotation and balance and offer good prices on name brand tires:

See if they have a warehouse near you (membership required, though).

Use winter tires if you expect to drive mainly on snow or ice...I live in Southern California, and it's pretty warm year-round, so we mostly use All Season or Summer tires...

Hi Rebecca B.

I bought the Goodyear Triple Treads and am very pleased with them. Tirerack.com has ratings on tires that fit the OBW by size of the originals (Mine were Fiestones - don't remember the exact model - aggressive tread though) or by car model. The Triple Treads were rated very highly by people reviewing them there.

My only regtret is that I lost a few mpg compared to the original Firestones BUT they really work well in rain and snow, especially in trying to get out of a parking spot after a heavy snow - clearing the area somewhat around the car first - of course!

Go to the Tirerack site and read the owner's evaluation and then compare those with other brands that you are considering. Hope that this helps you.

Consumers Reports has the Triple Treads as the Top Rated All season also. I have them on my Forester, probably the best tire I've driven. I'm on the West Coast (Canada) so my main concern is wet, but when it has snowed I have had no problem at all.

Yokohama tires are awesome.

I have some general suggestions for you.

- If you have enough money, get a set of dedicated winter tires/wheels... winter tires are much better for snow/ice than all seasons. If not, just get some nice all season tires.

- Shop around online for the best deal, then print it out and take it to your local tire place. Most of them will match or beat the deal.

- Don't cheap out on tires, they ARE the most important safety feature on your car.

- BUT don't overpay either, definitely do your homework!

For an all-season tire, you probably cannot go wrong with either of these, but if I were making the choice, I'd go with the Goodyear (and may put those on our 1999 Legacy OBW when the current tires wear out, in a couple of years).

Well, we have an Audi and a Subaru in this family. The Audi has two sets of tires, one set of all-seasons that I run from April-November, and another set of snow tires on their own rims that I run from November-April. The Subaru wears the same shoes year round, but rotated every 5,000-6,000 miles (spring and fall).

I must admit that having dedicated snow tires in an all-wheel-drive vehicle is really fantastic, and I recommend this to anyone who can afford it and can store the off-season set. We are in western New York, with weather not too different from yours in Wisconsin. Do what your budget and space permit. If you can swing only one set of tires, get the Goodyear Triple Treads.

I have a 2002 OBW and decided at the start of last month that it was time for new tires. I did the same thing as others have done: looked at Tire Rack, read the ratings at Consumer Reports, looked at Costco, and looked at this group.

And so when the time came, I decided to go with the Triple Treads. They were highly regarded in this group, got great comments in Tire Rack and probably most importantly they were the top rated tire in Consumer Reports--and not the most expensive either.

I did look at Costco and I do love the fact they offer rotation/balancing for the life of the tire. Only problem I have with them is that the only days we go to Costco are the weekends, and that is when everyone else is getting tires!

So, I bought the Triple Treads at Tire Rack, had them delivered directly to a garage in town--it's an option on Tire Rack at no extra charge. The tires were there basically the next business day. Had the tires mounted the day after that and love them. They drive very smoothly and handle the rain great. As to the snow, I'll let you know after this winter!

I have the TripleTreads on my '96 Outback and they're great. Smooth ride, good handling and great in rain...can't speak for snow, though, since I'm in Texas.

Recently fitted TripleTreads and got to try them in the snowy passes of BC this winter - outstanding grip - I've never had 'winter' tires on a car before so can't compare - but these tyres are definitely the best 'all seasons' I've used on the OBW and quiet but also the most expensive.
