The owner's manual just says switch the front and backs on the same side. That does not use the spare at all.

Hi,
When radial tires first came on scene, that was the recommendation. As technology improved, that recommendation's been dropped by all the tire manufacturers I know of. Michelin was first, IIRC, and that was back in the '70s. Still, old ideas die slowly, and since many car manufacturers still spec a front to back pattern, it's probably wise to use the pattern your book calls for mainly for warranty purposes.
FWIW, I've used an "X" type pattern (there are several--tire mfr websites often show them) since Michelin first ok'd it, with either 4 or
5 tires depending on type of spare, and have gotten up to 107,000 miles on a set of five tires (translates into a little over 80k per tire.) No problems.Rick
