After about 5 minutes it stops working engine is still running but transmission is not making the car go. You have to shut the car off and wait a minute or so then it will work again for a minute or so

Perhaps you could tell us what kind of car it is, what year it is, what kind of transmission, etc.

Sounds like the pump is out if it is an automatic. Or the filter MIGHT be plugged. Either way, I'd have it checked out by a qualified shop.
