Thats normal. Its doing what it is supposed to do.
Dear Paul
hmmmmm thank you for the reply but you are wrong. It will get to the temp of closed loopin about 3-5 min. The fan should not come on even at low speed until the engine is 212 degrees F (100 degrees C) which takes about 15 minutes at idle on a 90 degree day (32 degrees C). I have a real anomally with this one. The interesting fact of the fan coming on 3-5 min is that it coincides with the transition from open loop to closed loop operation. I think somebody in the process of installing a stereo in an otherwise fine little car may have reversed polarity. The factory radio was smoked. The relay output card for the cooling fan looks okay. I have yet to pull the PCM to see if they let any smoke out of the things in there.
Thank you and any help will be appreciated, Andy
Have you checked temp sensor function? Most GM's have two sensors. One for ECM and the other for the gauge / light. See what the ohmmeter says. You can also boil the sensor it with wires attached.
15 minutes seems like a long time to reach 212.
It sounds like you can access data stream. What is coolant temp when the fans come on? Does your scanner display a "cooling fan ON/OFF" PID?
