2002 Mazda MPV surges in park, in gear.

Today my wife said our 2002 Mazda MPD was acting strange when she was stopped and in gear. It felt like it was being pushed/bumped from behind, in a throbbing sort of way. I had her try putting the car in neutral and watch the tach. I had her rev it up a number of times and it looks stable, no engine speed variation. In gear, holding the car still withthe brake and throbbing, the tach is stable. Seems like the transmission is grabbing or something. A friend said that it had happened to his mothers car and it turned out to be a dirty transmission filter screen. My wife reports a sound like a tire loosing air when this occurs. It has started doing it today, I have not seen it first hand. Anyone have any insight on this? The car drives normally otherwise.

Thanks

Kevin
