automatic trans won't go out of park

I've got a 95 Avalon that the shifter will not move out of park. The button seems as though it is stuck or something. I can disconnect the linkage underneath and move thru the gears at that point. Any ideas on what to take a look at? Everything seemed to be working fine until I disconnected the battery to do some other work on the car, then when I reconnected it and started it and tried to put it into gear, it wouldn't budge. I had the transmission rebuild about 6 months ago - and would take it back to the mechanic but don't want to tow it if I don't have to.

Thanks,

Ron

Sounds like the problem is in the brake/shift interlock. I assume you're stepping on the brake before trying to press the shifter button. If not, do so. If so, and it's not working, that's the system to diagnose.

Did they have the brake shift interlock back on 1995 vehicles?

We see this often when the vehicle is parked on an incline towards the rear. You'll need to firmly press the shifter knob whilst holding the brake pedal and pull it out of reverse. No wqorries, the park paul can handle this.

Double check the adjustment of the brake light switch against the brake pedal - if the brake lights aren't coming on - the car won't shift out of park.
