My 2003 BMW left license tag light is out and the trunk keeps opening on its own.
Both happen at the same time. It's intermittent but both work and don't work at the same time so they must be related.
Is this a common BMW problem with the rear lights and locks associated?
check the ground for the tag light, maybe it's shorting to the trunk release?

I found the problem!
Searching for "trunk loom" I found that it's VERY COMMON for BMW trunk wires to break and fray. Bad design. Often the first things to go are the trunk lock and license tag light.
You'd think Germans would be better designers, but they're not! :(
No, but they both go through the same connector and same cable bundle, and they share a ground. Somewhere that connector, bundle, or ground is damaged.
