Left Oil Cap Off

I just discovered that my oil cap has been off for 6 weeks and 3000 miles.

Anything I should do besides change the oil and filter?

Thanks

put the oil cap back on :)

seriously, the worst that could have happened would be spraying oil all over the engine and making a stinky mess that might need to be cleaned up, but since you haven't implied that that's happened, I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.

I did the same thing on my car. I changed the oil and filter (and replaced the oil cap, natch). That was over 120,000 miles ago, and it's still going strong. You probably won't have any problems - any moisture that may have gotten in would have boiled off in normal operation.

Glad to see I'm not the first person to have done that. Just clean up the mess and change oil and filter as you mentioned.

Some vehicles have more issues with this than others... I remember when I was a little kid my parents had a Ford Pinto (actually not a bad car, despite the reputation) which had the 2.3 OHC motor - one day my mom took it to the grocery store and apparently while it was in the parking lot some unsavory character who must have had a similar car STOLE THE OIL CAP. (no inside hood release on that car) It was evident within a couple miles as there was enough oil splash off the camshaft to make lots of stinkiness.

Similarly, I used to have an old Scirocco with the 1.8 engine. I parked it for about 6 months one time as I just didn't have the time or money to fix it but I did have another car. when I went to move it, it fired right up but the seal on the oil cap had apparently dried out from not getting its regular daily soaking in oil. Even with the cap on, enough oil splash came off the cam and out the cap to make a big, smoky mess. I understand that later cars had a baffle over the cam to control this. A new cap from the dealer fixed it right up.

I have known 3 people to do that and all of us ended up with a blown engine in very few miles. You sure got lucky....

I would just do what you suggest and put a new cap on it quick...
