Malfunction indicator (engine light) stays on

What would cause the engine light to stay on in an '04 Honda CRV?

Manual says not to continue driving if it stays on, then says to make sure the gas cap is on tightly, but that it would take two or three days of driving for the light to go off, if that's the problem.

About one hundred things can cause the MIL to illuminate.

There is an alphanumeric code (e.g.: P1456) behind the light. You need to have a garage "read" the code(s) for you. AutoZone and PartSource will do that for free.

Any symptoms other than the light?

Thanks for the tip. There were no other symptoms.

Fortunately there's an AutoZone not far from me. UNfortunately, the light went off on my way down there! The gas tank was filled a couple of days ago, so I'm hoping it was just the gas cap which I re- tightened last night.

Thanks again...

Several hundred different things.

The light means the computer has registered an error code. You need to find someone with an OBD II code reader so you can see what the error code is. Knowing the error code puts you in the general direction of being able to figure out what the problem is.
