maza 323 neutral safety

Does anyone know how to adjust the neutral safety switch on a 1988 mazda 323, it doesn't start in park and sometimes not even in neutral and the backup lights stay on all the time. Is the switch bad or just in need of adjustment? Any help or documentation on this would be greatly appreciated.

If you take it apart you'll probably see that the contacts are worn. I'd just replace it with a new one (maybe $100) or a used one from a wrecker.

While you are waiting for your replacement switch you can bypass the broken switch by rewiring but your car will start at all gears. Also you will have to go without the backup lights if you decide to rewire so that it'll not stay on all the time.
