Neon won't start

All,

I posted here about a week ago looking for advice on a problem with my Nephew's car. He was going to have a friend fix it, but nothing has happened along those lines and I' anxious to get it out of my driveway!

It's a 1996 Neon with a 2.0l dohc. It won't start.

To rule out any basic items, I did the following:

  1. different battery (from my daily driver)
  2. checked all fuses (specifically iginition)
  3. checked for gas, etc.
  4. checked spark - There doesn't appear to be any.

When I go through the sequence to get the error codes, it returns a "54", which from what I've found indicates that there is no Cam signal at the PCM. I assume this is related to the camshaft sensor. Would this cause a no start condition?

Thanks! Doug

Sure, if the reason why it is not generating a cam signal is because the timing belt is broken...

well... duh! Sounds like that sensor is used by the engine computer to know where the engine is rotationaly. Without it, the computer has no idea when to fire the ignition. Check the connections at sensor. You should seriously consider having a mechanic diagnose the sensor for real as replacing the sensor for when the problem is elsewhere will cost twice as much as a mechanic would charge for diagnosis -- unless you happen to have a spare laying around.

or the sensor is broken or a wiring problem
