Can anyone tell me if the new body style corolla will actually get the 38-40 mpg? I commute daily and need an inexpensive car that will get me killer fuel economy and not be worn out when I still have payments to make. Thanks.

The ultimate inexpensive commuter car is the Echo.
It's about half the price of the Prius with about the same highway mileage, and maybe $4K less than a Corolla with much better mileage.
I have an '03 Echo manual, and I average 48 mpg, dropping to 45 mpg mid-winter. Interior and trunk space seem comparable to the Corolla. It's shorter but higher. Zero problems so far.
However, if your idea of a great car is power, automatic, heated, remote, deluxe leather wheel covers, the Echo is not for you.
