1992 toyota pickup transmission

Jan 27, 2006 3 Replies

I have a 1992 ext cab 2wd pickup, 5 std man transmission, 22re motor.

The Transmission is whining in 5th gear, and a little in 3rd gear, very quiet in 4th gear.

have 285,000 miles.

car running good

What will happen to the transmission?

Do I need a new one or rebuilt?

what kind of transmission does the car have.

j.

thanks in advance

Whine in a manual transmission is generally caused by either a worn or bad bearing or worn gears. Another symptom of worn gear is the transmisison popping out of gear. Try changing the transmission fluid and see if things quiet down. You should get prices, but it may be less expensive to replace the bearings than to replace it.

forgot, did change transmission oil.

is quiter, but still whines

When you changed the oil, were there any metal particles in it? How about on the drain plug?
