95 corolla stumbles

New to me 4a-fe, 95 corolla manual, stumbled a bit under load in pretty wet slushy conditions yesterday, otherwise fine.

The usual suspects would be plug wires, cap and rotor. I don't have a Haynes yet, and my experience is limited to carbureted Volvo motors; does this motor have a serviceable cap and rotor?

The fact this was under load might point to vacuum I suppose. Is there a usual diagnosis for this? I just don't know all the fixes yet.

I've read up on these motors, and apparently they use oil (PO said it was consuming oil). None is being obviously burned so I suppose it is getting by the rings.

I am pretty sure that the 4A-FE motor has a serviceable cap and rotor. Some aftermarket ignition parts can cause the symptoms you are describing, and rather than experiment with which ones work and do not work, your best bet is to stick to OEM (Denso) cap, rotor, and wires and Denso or NGK plugs.

A vacuum leak would probably cause the same symptoms regardless of road conditions, and since the problem appears to be related to wet conditions, I'd start by looking at ignition parts.

FWIW, I have always used aftermarket ignition parts on my 4A-FE with no problem at all.

Truckdude, if you have already found aftermarket ignition parts that work well on the 4A-FE, then you may want to share which parts work well.

I'll freely admit that I have a very strong bias towards OEM parts because I know their quality, I know they fit well and work, and because I don't like to give recommendations for parts if I do not know how they will perform.
