Can't specifically answer your question but I have seen European versions of the same cars imported to America have different lights, front and back. I suspect it has something to do with regulations in each country regarding safety.

This is exactly right. The shape, location, and color of lights are dictated by the markets that the car is designated for in the First Sale. A car bound for North America has different lights than the same car bound for Australia.
