we just bought a used 2003 Echo 2 door with 44k miles. so far so good. What kind of mileage does it really get and did we make a mistake? 1.5 liter eng.

Auto or 5 speed?
i had the predecessor top the echo, the Tercel, and with an AT in semi-rural driving i got 45 MPG. My mileage, for some reason, is usually better than most.
Expect 35-38 on bad days.
i like them.
even if they ARE Butt-UGLY (ducking and running...)
You didn't say if it were automatic or standard, but my 2000 automatic gets about 38 MPG city, 41 hwy.

My 2000 2 door 5 speed never got over the high 30s.
With my 5 spd, I average about 49 summer, 45 winter.
