OT Rented a Saturn Ion....not bad!

I've always been turned off by Saturns for some reason (maybe because they're GM, or simply not that great looking) but I rented one in DC and drove around DC, VA and MD for five days two weeks ago, and was quite pleasantly surprised. This one had all the bells and whistles - door locks,(which lock when you put the car in gear), windows, sunroof, etc.and even a CD player (but I had no CDs with me, dammit). I found it to be a somewhat peppy 4 cyl. and rode well at speed, in fact it felt rock steady at 75 and more. I like the fact of the plastic body parts, ease of entry and exit, and (outside of the slightly numb-feeling steering) a pleasant car to drive. Gas mileage seemed okay - (very) roughly by my estimate - about 24 mpg overall with more emphasis on city driving.

I have no clue how long lasting they may be, but I might even look at the Saturn line before buying a new car.

Oh, by the way, one surprise about the car. We were gong to do some interstate hwy travel, so I wanted to check the spare, and guess what? Behind the spare in the trunk....is the battery! I don't know whether the thinking was that the engine compartment was too crowded, or that the battery would stay cooler in the trunk, but it was sort of a shock when you're not expecting it!

Some of the latest Saturns are supposed to be pretty good but not the Ion. What are you comparing it to?

I looked at the Ion (and it's Chevy cousin the Cobalt) pretty seriously before I bought my new Corolla. It was the difference in gas mileage that finally tipped the scales in favor of the Corolla, but the ride and drivability of the Cobalt were pretty darned good. The 100K warranty doesn't hurt either.

If the Corolla didn't beat it by 7 mpg I most likely would be driving one today.
