(OT:) You have GOT to be kidding me!!!! (Telethon for Affordable Housing)

Wow, sign me up for a hefty donation. Seriously, I have to wonder how the cable company figures they're gong to help out with affordable housing by having their subscribers send in ten or twenty bucks ...? Affordable housing in super-affluent communities has been a problem for some time now. It's said that in Santa Barbara, the joe-average wage earners like policemen, fire fighters, nurses, (not to mention bellhops and chambermaids) are coming from less affluent towns to work in Santa Barbara, and their commutes, never comfortable in length, are now becoming very onerous due to the skyrocketing gasoline costs.

Some things are just plain ludicrous.

That's a little different. We're talking Martha's Vineyard here! This is the place where 'outsiders' are treated like crap.

It's a place where one doesn't *expect* to find "affordable housing". Unless one is wealthy, at which point the non-affordable for most is affordable. Not exactly the first place I'd think of in realistic terms for a second home - to put it mildly. As for attitude toward outsiders... it's an island & therefore with only so much square mileage - would lose its ambience & cachet if became overly crowded. Already touristy - if those tourists were to be able to afford to build more homes there... could see the long-term residents' POV re: resistance, big time.

I guess that in some areas the housing market is way out of control. Seeing what some houses sell for in other parts of the country,I would like to have an idea of the wages there. I am in an area where around $ 100,000 will put you in a decent house around 1200 sq ft or so with 3 small bed rooms on a 1/2 acre lot. Very few houses outside some big develoments go over

They said the "average" is $675,000

It was a friggin' commercial, doofus! I wasn't even really paying attention to it until they gave the prices for homes. That's when I realized they were talking about MV.
