Purportedly Leaking Water Pump Follow-Up

04 Avalon, 70,000 miles

I last posted that I had taken my 04 Avalon into a Tucson Toyota dealer (Precision) for the steering recall. The service rep called and told me there was evidence that my water pump was leaking and recommended it be changed. Also said the timing belt should be cvhanged. Anyhow, following Ray's advice I checked around the black plastic cover and right at the crank and it's dry as a bone. The car has never evidenced any coolant loss. Disappointing behavior on the part of our local dealer. jor

I missed the mileage from your earlier posts. I would be surprised if the water pump was actually leaking at only 70,000 miles. Water pumps start to weep a little somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 miles, so replacing it every other timing belt change is good insurance.

Don't go to Precision dealerships.

Don't go to any dealership that charges higher than list prices for parts. I was surprised any of them did that, but a decade ago I discovered that some charge 20% over list, whether they install the part or you do.
