questions about keys etc Avalon

2001 Avalon. Is it true that if you lose all keys you have to change whole system at huge expense ? If you were given only one key and a remote with a second hand car how do you know if the key is a master or a sub key and what is the difference? Is it easy to program the key transponder and or the remote?

That's what the Toyota dealer tells you when you pick up your new Toyota. My Hilux came with 3 keys, 2 with remote's, one without but the one without has a tag attached with the key number and apparently you need at least one of the keys to make another. Best talk to a dealer or a locksmith who does electronic car keys and get a spare.

Looks like our Toyota's are differently keyed to the one being discussed.

Depends on the type of transponder in the key, in Australia most toyo keys are using the Texas Instruments transponder and they can be easily programmed by any decent locksmith with the right tools. If you are unlucky and get one of the few models of toyo that doesn't use TI transponders then you might be out of luck. There is a simple tool that locksmiths use to determine what type of transponder you have.
