Start-up trouble shooting! 88 Corolla

i have a friend with a 1988 corolla, with a 4AF motor. he had recently done a few things with the car, but no swapping of parts under the hood. when he tries to start the motor, the starter works but the engine doesn?t start. there?s almost no reaction. there is spark in the plugs, and there is plenty of fuel. i?m stumped, and i would like some suggestions please..

Did you check to see if the fuel is getting into the cylinders?

Is the starter turning the engine over at its normal speed?

Remember the basics - air, fuel, and spark to start the car.

ok, i don?t know a whole lot about my friend?s car and i didn?t check out a whole lot, but fuel and spark seem to be good. other than that... i?m not so sure. the engine doesn?t seem to turn over.

When an engine does not turn over, that means that when you turn the key to the start position, it does not crank or move.

Earlier, you mentioned that the starter works, and in your latest post, you said that the engine does not seem to turn over. Do you mean that the engine cranks when the starter is engaged but does not start?

When you say that "fuel is good" do you mean that the fuel gauge showing registering gas in the tank, or has someone actually checked to see that fuel is actually being delivered to the cylinders?

When you checked for spark, did someone actually remove a spark plug and check to see that it sparks when the engine is cranked?

my friend fixed the problem.. and to answer your questions in the order that you asked, yes that?s what i meant, yes he actually checked for fuel, and yes he took the plugs out and fired them.

but thank you for assisting.
