Strange stuttering

Hi, all -

I have a '96 Tercel 4-speed manual with 74K miles. The car runs great (44 MPG!), but I've noticed that when I leave the driveway in the morning, there is a slight amount of "stuttering" just as I lift the clutch pedal and begin accelerating in 1st gear. It feels like it is clutch related. However, after driving for even 5 minutes, the problem vanishes and everything works great for the rest of the day. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks!

The clutch might be starting to fail.

Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder next to the brake master cylinder on the firewall.

Is the car losing any engine oil or are there any external fluid leaks?

No leaks of any kind. I'll check the clutch fluid - thanks.

Reverse seems fine. What I can't figure out is, if it's a clutch problem or engine mount issue, why does it go away after I've driven for a few minutes?

I'll try the test you suggest - thanks

Reverse seems fine, but I'll check it carefully tomorrow. I'll also try the parking brake test. Thanks for the advice.
