HI - I am new to this group, but hoping to hear any info I can.
I'm trying to tune up my toyo camry 1996. I've tuned up other vehicles I've owned - an old Jeep - but this will my first try with the Toyota.
Any tips or things I should pay attention to?

'96...Cap and rotor, or electronic?
If it's electronic, there's not much to tune. You don't say how many miles, but basically around 100,000 miles you change the spark plugs, and the coil packs either when they stop working or the wire erodes. They're about $125 each...
Are the coil packs difficult to do? It looks tight on my 01 camry. I just did my spark plug wires (still original at 137k) and plugs. That took care of my engine light misfire code.
But I'm dreading trying to squeeze in there to do the coils..
On my Tercel they were attached to the top of the plug sockets. To remove the plug socket, you grasped the coil pack and pulled.
Ah.. more involved than that on my camry..I guess I'll wait till I HAVE to and pay someone with more patience than I've had lately..
Changing the coil packs is not part of routine maintenance.
How many miles on the car?
No, but what happens if one of the plug wires breaks down?
And, at 127K, my Tercel (a while after I sold it: it had 117K when I sold it) threw a coil pack.
I think they are as bad as timing belts, myself!
To be honest, I don't know if the wires are available as separate parts from the coil packs, but my guess is that they are.
My '83 Tercel was pretty neat. It looked like a cap and rotor type ignition, but no rotor! But, it had four independant wires. Replace the wires and plugs and off you go!
