What word would you suggest is the subject of the sentence above?

I'll have to chew on that one for a while, but allow me to offer, "for whom the bells toll," whom is the subject of the sentence.

The subject of "for whom the bells toll" is -bells-. The -bells- are doing the tolling, not -whom-. The object of the sentence is -whom-.
