1990 Camry 3S-FE - Cold starting issue

I'll put what I know in dot points

  1. When cold the car takes up to 20 seconds to start.
  2. If you hold the key at start for 20 seconds, after 15 seconds it stutters before it starts.
  3. After it has been started once it then starts immediately (Even if you shut it off immediately after a cold start).
  4. If you turn the key to start for 1/4 second, then back to run, and to start again. It starts normally (

Battery

Sounds like ignition, as the car drives normally? Check the spark strength by holding a well insulated screwdriver up one of the sparkplug leads at the plug-end. Get an assistant to crank the engine. The spark should be blue and jump at least a 1cm to the engine cam-cover. Obviously, hold the blade of the screwdriver about a cm from the cover or engine block for this check.

If the spark is weak, check the lead's age, the year of manufactur is usually on the leads,..next is the coil, Do a Google search (Groups) for this NG with "coil resistance" measurements as a filter. You'll need an ohm-meter. A workshop-manual is a useful guide.

Thanks. Did some tests today, and I think I have rules out spark as the problem. Spark looks good, and plugs are dry when pulled from the engine, indicating no fuel.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I'm thinking this may be it. We bought the car second hand, so who knows.

Anyway, I'm going to diagnose the fuel system tomorrow.

Thanks for your response.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I purchased some Carby cleaner and cleaned out the throttle body. So far it seems to have cleared up the problem (along with the sticky throttle!), but time will tell.

Thanks to Daniel for mentioning about the IAC/ISC Valve
