What is reasonable labor for replacing a timing belt for this vehicle, mechanic's time that is? Thank you, Seamus J. Wilson

If you are prepared to shop around, some dealers offer specials on that job. The standard price is around $300 labour. Altho I dont know what the hours for the job are. In Oz, the industry regulating body specifies hours for most jobs on cars and their make, and the list is available to the public.

If your car is leaving engine oil on the ground over-night, its good practice to get the seals done and the water-pump if its done a lot of miles

*and* the car has not had proper coolant maintenance,..other wise they have to do the same job all over again.

With my '96, I paid best part of $800 (at a dealer) for the belt/seals/oil-pump. The seals were rock-hard on mine and had damaged the oil-pump shaft. The $170 oil-pump is driven off the same belt.

I know it sounds like a lot of money, but once its done, the car will be fine for years provided oil and coolant is changed as per handbook. Do shop around tho.
