Brake light is coming on randomly

Nov 12, 2004 5 Replies

I have a 2002 Camry LE. (Love it) I'm just shy of 47000 miles and still have a little warranty left so I will be taking it to the dealer next week. Just thought I'd see if anyone had any thoughts about it beforehand.

About a week ago I noticed when I pulled away from a stoplight that my brake light was on. I checked that the emergency brake lever was all the way down and the light went off. I didn't think much of it at the time. Since then though the brake light has come on randomly when leaving a stoplight. I do use the emergency brake as my driveway is fairly step and I didn't want to stress the tranny so it does get used. I noticed the other night that the emergency brake lever seemed to go up a little easier then it used to. The brakes seem to react normally otherwise and when I pull away from the light I don't feel any drag from the brakes. Just a faulty sensor somewhere or maybe something more?

Thanks! Paul

Check the brake fluid level. Most likely low enough to cause the light to come on when the fluid sloshs around in the reservoir.

My Opinion MU

and you will probably need new brakes soon

True. Brake fluid level drops as the pads wear.

There are two indicators labeled "Brakes" IIRC. One has to do with the brake fluid but the other monitors the emergency hand brake. If the hand brake cable is jammed and won't release, the second light will come on.
