Buying 99 or 00 Camry. Any lookouts?

I bought a '99 Camry LE V6 new and by 58,000 have had the following experience: Rattling front strut suspension replaced under TSB - noise started at 22,000 miles and replaced at 31,000. I saw the labor and parts list and it would have been very expensive. The rear suspension became very "rigid" and hard riding at about 35,000 miles but Toyota checks it and ensures me it is just fine. The driver side shoulder harness has not fully retracted by itself for the last 10,000 miles. It's fine when being worn. Passengers over 6 foot tall cannot ride in the rear seats without holding their head slightly forward to avoid the rear window/roof line. There are a lot of good things, but you only asked about things to watch for. The front suspension is a big one!

I just noticed a rattling in my 98 XLE V6 on the right side. I sounds like it is coming from the inside the dash, maybe the climate control system plastic piping came loose? But your post makes me wonder about the strut. When you had the problem, did it sound like it may be coming from inside the dash?

The sound on mine was somewhere between a jangle and a rattle of something being loose when going over small bumps at 20 - 35 miles an hour. As for where it was coming from, mine sounded like something was loose in the left front quarter-panel. If you've not had the modified strut suspension parts installed, I wouldn't discount it.
