Camry LE 2000 Unable to start - Starter Problem?

Jan 17, 2005 6 Replies

On one good day, my camry LE 2000 decided not to start. I shut it down

2 hours earlier and when I tried to start it, it just cranked and cranked. Tried the horn, alarm and everything works. Checked the battery terminals, and cables. Everything looks OK.

I got somebody to jump start it and it started. Drove to Autozone and they brought out the big machine to test it. Told me that the battery is OK, he pointed out that the started might be going out since the alternater is OK. Can't remember the reason he gave but my engine was running when he hooked the machine tested to the car.

MY Question: How do I get it fixed myself. I know somebody was mentioning about giving it a good knock and some ppl have told me about it also.

What is the remedy if I want to fix it myself w/o replacing it with a refurbished unit.

THANKS!

you said "cranked and cranked" --- so it sounds like the starter is ok to me. If it just clicked but didn't turn engine over then it would be the starter (contacts).

If it cranked it aint the starter ,is it. So it is fuel or spark related. Next time pull a plug wire hold the end near the block while someone turns it over, if spark is good you will see and hear it. If you get spark it is fuel related.

Hmmm... let's see .... how far up in the spark plug cap does the spark plug go? 3/4"? Just a bit TOO FAR for a spark to jump to the block, don't you think? Of course you could zap your igniter doing what you recommend!

IF one is to follow your suggestion, one should insert a spark plug or a some such metal rod to bring the live terminal out to the end of the cap and then .... arc to ground.

Wow! Such hostility.

Can't we all just get along? :-)

Seconded.

In fact, what do we want in this group? I mean, what do you all see as the main aim? It seems obvious, yes, but gets lost in clouds of gunsmoke ::-(
