Camry points to look for

My 1991 Honda Civic died an early death when the water pump siezed. Should have had 25K more before the T-belt needed replacing but that is life.

I have a chance to buy a one owner 1993 Camry with 175K for just under

3K. The car is one owner and appears to have been maintained. The original owners manual is still in place. I have tracked the original owner down but he is out of town until Wednesday afternoon.

One point that concerns me is crude under the oil cap. The oil, on the dip stick, is not new but shows no sign of abuse. Tranny ATF fluid is clean with no smell. There are no obvious oil leaks. Starts fast, it had been sitting for 4 days in 20F weather Body has no rust and doesn't appear to have any damge and I will get the credit union to run car fax wednesday morning.

Anything I should be taking a hard look at?

I had an 1984 Celica that I bought with 150K and put another 360K on before the body go too rough for my tastes.

Have a mechanic due a compression check. In some areas, AAA offers mechanical evaluations for a fee. It's $82.50 to $110 depending on whether or not you're a member, and which membership type you have if you are a member. However they no longer do a compression check.

1992-1996 was a very good generation of Camrys. Starting in 1993, major decontenting began. $3000 seems a bit high for a 1993 with 175K miles.

When I sell a used car I get AAA to do the inspection. I think that I get more than the cost back in a higher price for the used car. Invariably they find a few minor issues which I can fix prior to the sale.

Vehicle Inspection Tests The following tests are performed by AAA's expert technicians at our vehicle inspection clinics and Car Care Plus facilities.

==== Oviously that's a generic list. On the Camry there is no accelerator pump, choke, pitman arm or heat riser valve. Sounds like a very comprehensive check list for a reasonable price.
