can a 4cyl. be rebuilt for less $1000?

I did a basic rebuild (changed only what was needed, no crank work or boring) on my Tercel for $1100 CAD using mostly Toyota parts. If you do it yourself you may be able to get it under $1000 but be prepared to put in many hours of labour.

Be careful here. Engines that have suffered a bearing failure, may have metal debris from the worn bearing or failed parts deposited thru the oil galleries of the engine. This can mean the engine life after a patch-up is short. The only true way to get around your problem is to strip the engine and ascertain why the bearing failed, check the wear tolerances of the crankshaft journals, oil-pump, silent shafts, cams etc to ensure they are within spec, and inspect the sump for any metal. If there is any deposits, a thorough clean of the oil galleries in the block and head is indicated.

Ever notice how many cars are for sale with a "just rebuilt" engine? I wouldn't touch one with a 12 foot pole. Get one from a wreck that can be test run for half the $1000. I have bought maybe 10 Honda, Toyota and Mazda from the yards and only one was poor. Luck? maybe. But I have seen so many kin and friends pay big bucks for an overhaul that was good for 6 mos. Warrantee? You won't live long enough to get justice.....BobV
