1996 Tacoma gas mileage dropped

Greetings,

I have a 1996 Tacoma 4X4 with automatic transmission and almost 100K miles. I was getting about 20 mpg, but about 3 months ago it suddenly dropped down to about 17 mpg. It happened from one tank to the next (and has been consistent since) with no change in performance. I took it to my mechanic who said it's running fine (neither rich nor lean) and said it wouldn't be worth hooking up a computer since I don't have the "check engine light". According to him, the only inputs to the computer are the same as the inputs to the check engine light. Any ideas??

Has it has the O2 sensor replaced yet? It's overdue.

Nope, never had to do anything yet. I'll give it a try, should be relatively easy. Thanks
