1998 Tacoma Maintenance

The obvious answer is: The filter is 10 years old. Might be time to replace.

Q. Does the manual *ever* show where to replace the filter or timing belt?

If the answer is "NO," then you'll need to keep on top of this yourself. Maybe someone on here can recommend a good replacement interval.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess the answer is not that obvious to me. The service schedule includes timing for replacing other filters, but with no reference to the fuel filter. On other vehicles, that has been an indication of "life of vehicle" or only if problems occur. I was just curious if anyone had a handle on Toyota's policy toward this vehicle's fuel filter.

Also per the manual, at 90K the timing belt replacement is recommended "except T100/Tacoma/4Runner with 4 cylinder". Why not those vehicles?

They have metallic timing chains not rubber belts. If you make the inquiry about the fuel filter in the "toyotas only" web page I believe the answer will be that the fuel filters used on the truck \4runner line of vehicles from that era are considered a lifetime ( yes, lifetime) filter, that is only replaced under very unusual circumstances. dc

I wonder how a fuel filter could last a vehicle's lifetime? There is no telling how many miles a Toyota is going to be driven (estimate 200k to 500k miles) or how sleazy the gas stations are going to be where the owner fills the tank.

Under super extreme conditions like that, I'd still give it 100K Miles before worrying about it, and/or do a fuel volume and flow test to confirm that it's so bad that the flow is restricted.

The inline filter has an enormous capacity for dirt, the stuff on the top layer just adds to the filtration effect.

If the fuel is THAT crappy, you need to shoot your fuel suppliers for gross negligence... It's going to clog the 'sock' filter on the fuel pickup in the tank first.
