1999 4Runner Radio Question

I just bought a used 1999 4Runner Limited, with no radio. I know nothing about 4Runners, so I have some pretty basic questions that I hope someone out there can answer...

First, how do I know which original equipment (not after-market) stereo to put in it? It has the double-high opening. There is one co-axial type cable that looks like a standard antenna cable. Then there's a second, smaller one. (What is that smaller antenna cable for?) Finally, there's a white, rectangular block plug that appears to have all the wires for power, speakers, etc. The truck has six speakers.

Below the radio opening, deep in the dash innard, there's a silverish metal box with cooling fins on it that looks like it could be an amp.

I called a dozen junkyards, none of which were any help. I called a Toyota dealer and they quickly redirected me to a junkyard, so I didn't get any useful info out of them.

On eBay, I've seen some double-high stereo/CD/cassette units that look promising (e.g., P/N 56808), but they have two block plug recepticals on the back and I only have one block plug (that I know of) in my truck. Is it the case that you use only one of those recepticals for a given installation?

Any help in identifying the proper unit for my 1999 4Runner would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I would check crutchfield for a compatible after market radio. They also sell kits that should plug into the stock connectors. If you're not familiar with crutchfield they carry a lot of electronics for home and auto. crutchfield.com. They are a bit pricey but you can find models and then try and find them somewhere for a better price.

I have my stock stereo from my 98 tacoma that was am/fm cassette and took

1/2 of the double-high opening. Willing to sell cheap if you are looking for the original equipment. Only condition on the sale is that you send me back the cassette that the darn installers forgot to eject before they removed it from the vehicle (or me, the stupid consumer forgot to grab before I took it in).

www,bought4less.com double din or single din and a pocket

no need to waste your money on overpriced toyota radios when aftermarket are designed to bolt in and preform so much better for a lot less money and last longer too.

Too bad the aftermarket players are so damned ugly. What happened to the good old black face car stereo?? I don't need the video entertainment!

The ones that say anti-theft on them (at least til 97 model) use the single plug from the amplifier. If you want to go unamplified the 2 plugs you see are plugged into the back of the amp. I'd stick with getting a radio for an amplified vehicle - sounds a whole lot better. Sounds like you bought a theft recovery vehicle - I mean who would keep thhe jack and crank and tool kit.
