Chirping - maybe belts?

2002 Tacoma with 22k miles. Symptom: Chirping sound under hood toward front of engine. Begins within 20 seconds of starting on cold mornings, goes away gradually within 5 minutes. Can't reproduce the sound unless the car's been sitting for at least 3-4 hours. My mechanic will have the car on Tuesday for oil/filter, tire rotation and other routine maintenance, but meanwhile, I've decided to obsess about the noise.

1) Is there an easy trick to figure out if this is just a noisy belt? The sound's hard to localize. Any suggestions must be do-able with gloves on. It's not gonna stop snowing here until Monday.

2) Anyone aware of known problems with any of the devices in the "belt zone" of these trucks (alternator, compressor, etc)? This is what I'm obsessing about today.
