fuel injection system service at 15,000?

I was just told by my Toyota dealer that I should have a routine fuel injection system service at 15,000. How important is this service? Is it really needed every 15,000 miles?

I always get the basic grease-oil job at 3,000-4,000 miles even though I've heard it isn't needed that often. It's cheap enough. But that fuel injection service is expensive- I think the service guy said something like $125 or so.

The service by the dealer is a procedure that is done around town for about half that price. They disconnect the fuel line and pump in some super cleaner under pressure to the injectors. Go to your parts store and get two "Chevron Techron" bottles and put them in your tank.Don't buy the cheap crap. Costco sells them for around five dollars each.Once a year should do it. Good Luck.......Bill

Your Toyota dealer, like so many other Toyota dealers, is trying to rip you off. What does your owners manual state that you need to do at

15,000 miles?

Toyota vehicles are quality products. But, Toyota Motor Car Company is a lousy car company based on my experience with the way they encourage their service departments to cheat their customers.

Sounds a little excessive to me. My truck runs fine at 125,000 miles with no f.i. service ever. I wouldn't even consider it until the warrantee runs out. Just my opinion.

It's called cleaning your wallet out! Avoid all those deal add on - like oil additives, rear brake adjustment, fabric protector, paint protector, undercoating. They are pure $ makers for the dealer! Especially at 15k miles --- maybe 90k.

your dealer is hosing you. the injectors don't need any routine servicing.

It's not limited to Toyota. All the large corporations do the same. Try Nissan if you really want to get hosed.

This is true, the injectors normally do not require any service. However, this service is usually done to remove the carbon that builds up on the back of the intake valves on a fuel injected engine. When enough carbon builds up it will cause drivability problems.

How often should it be done? Depends on the quality of the gasoline in your area. I would say 15,000 miles would be a little early. I would suggest somewere between 30,000 - 60,000 miles. It really depends on the quality of the gasoline and that can vary widely.

I asked Bell Road Toyota about servicing the injectors and they told me there is no requirement for it. I pressed the matter to see what they would say and their response was if I was worried to pour a can of injector cleaner in the gas tank. Does that mean the dealer is honest or stupid?

Could be either one. It all depends on who you talk to. It also depends on whether or not the dealership provides any training for their service writers. Some service writers only know that you put gas in a car and drive it. Others are techs that got tired of turning wrenches and are quite knowledgable. I have pesonally seen some cars go 100,000 miles without a problem. Yet someone else with the same exact car has problems at 40,000 miles and an injector flush fixes their problems. I also know that most people buy their gas at a name brand station and get good quality fuel. Yet, others buy the cheapest shit they can find just to save a penny a gallon. These are the folks who usually have the problems.

There's the real reason injectors need servicing. Of course if King George would "jawbone" OPEC (instead of sleeping with them), maybe gas wouldn't have risen by 8o cents a gallon in two years. But that's another story.

It means that they are more honest than most.

Bell Toyota has always give me forthright answers, and never attempted to sell me anything that I did not need. Right Toyota on the other hand is the most aggressively dishonest shop that I've ever encountered.

Really. That's interesting to know about Wright. I also suppose they are higher priced since they are in Snottsdale...
