<MIKE> Re: 85 22re poor start

Thanks for reply. The choke plate is not closing. I also tried with ignition on. It seems to be locked in open position, because when I try to force it closed, it will not move. When I have more time I will try to see why. It seems to be mechanical, do you agree? Also Toyota no longer makes the choke coils, so I hear from local dealer.

Make sure the choke is working properly. With the ignition off pump the accelerator one time. Remove the air cleaner and look at the choke plate, it should be fully closed when cold. If not, check to see what is keeping it from closing. It is possible for the chole coil to lose it's tension and cause this. If that is the problem replace the choke coil.

Yes, if it won't move it is mechanical. I would check the linkage for binding and maybe the choke coil itself could be frozen. If the dealer no longer has the choke coil you could try aftermarket or a wrecking yard.

2-3-05 You are holding the throttle open a little when you try to move the choke plate? IIRC the choke did not close on a cold engine until you depressed the throttle. Good luck. Ed
