Replacing 4Runner Exhaust

The exhaust is about shot on my '88 4Runner. I figure the catalytic converter should be replaced as well as it is probably at least partially blinded by now.



How should I go about getting this job done? Should I let bids from shops around town for a turnkey job? Or, should I replace the converter myself and then get quotes for the balance of the job?



I don't know how much 'muffler repair' shops mark-up cat converters or the quality of the products they sell. Any brands I should seek/avoid?



Any guess on what I should spend for this? I am not looking for performance - meaning, that I would pay 25% more for a bit of performance but not 100% more.

How long do you plan to keep it? For my '90 Rnr I purchased Bosol (one piece) exhaust from local Olympic Auto Parts store -- it had a life time warranty. When it rusted ouf few years later (many short trips) I took it in with receipt and got a complete new system. They run around $100 or $120. I doubt your cat is band just due to age/mileage. Was easy to install a 1 piece sytem -- especially with a grinder! I'll be ready for a third one in another couple of years!

imho: Don't pay for a cat replacement unless absolutely necessary.

The dealer will replace the tailpipe and muffler for ~$130US (includes labor, gaskets and hangers). THAT exhaust will have a lifetime warranty on parts and labor (for you!). Any Toy dealer will honor the warranty. Good deal!

I've heard that for the 3VZN-E you can get the later version of the part ('90-'95?) which is larger diameter (Vrroooommmmmmm!)
