Swinging Idleing problem on 22RE 4WD '88 Toyota PU.

Look for vacuum leak.

Does it only do this with the brakes applied? If so, your idle speed is likely too high (if its over about 1000-1100 RPM, the ECU cuts the fuel injectors off when the brakes are applied), or the throttle position sensor (TPS) is out of adjustment

I would try replacing the thermostat first of all. Then if that isn't it, I would look for a vacuum leak.

Thanks for all the advice; I'll check it out in the following days. Some questions first:

-Where is the vacuum and how do I check for leaks in it?

-Are thermostats prettys universal, easy to install, and are pretty cheap? >_<

Also, I don't know if this means anything, but my Father said that when we brought it in to get a muffler leak fixed, there would be a huge spark that came from the spark plug wire/spark plug that went up in the air (that's when he said it was rev up). When it disappeared, he said, that's when it revved down. That's when we replaced spark plugs and spark plug wires. Could it also have anything to do with the distributor?

I'm not sure about the spark thing, I haven't ever seen it myself but I will definitely be looking out for anything like that next time I crack the hood while it does it. It seemingly only does it after I've been driving around for a while and I just have the clutche in at a stop, letting it idle.
