Tire size on 98 Tacoma

Hey Folks...

I recently bought a 1998 Tacoma 4x4. The truck came with 265/75/15's. When I look at the sticker on the door jamb, it only lists 225/75/15 for load and inflation info. Does this mean the truck came originally with the 225's ?? Is the speedometer wrong ?? It's time to replace them , not sure what size I should get ?? The 265's feel a little Balloonie ?? Any suggestions ?? Do I go slightly smaller 235 ?? 245 ??

Many thanks .......Steve

Not sure the gear ratios of the 98's, but if its a V6, 265 tires are stock. If its a 2.7L, 225 are stock. I have a 03 2.7L and have 265 tires on it. It came with 225's but has the same gear ratio as the V6's. My speedo will show me as slightly slower than I actually am and my mileage is below what it should be. For every 100kms on the odo, I actually went 106kms.

the 98's 2.7 4 cyl. also came with a 265 option (which is the same as a 31

10.50).

I have a 2003 4X4 that came with optional 16 inch tires. On the sticker below the striker plate, it only gives the inflation pressures for several

15 inch tire sizes. Above the striker plate, is a smaller sticker that gives the inflation pressure for my 16 inchers. Perhaps the same was true for your truck, but the smaller "optional" sticker has fallen off.

I have the same stickers.

Question for winter drivers...do you leave your 265 tires on in the snow? Do you have problems with the wide tire?

265/75/15's are probably not the original size. It is more likely 225/75/15.

The speedo would be off somewhat:

original: 225(0.75)*2 + 15(25.4) = 337.5 + 381 = 718.5 mm = 28.3 inches

replacement: 265(0.75)*2 + 15(25.4) = 397.5 + 381 = 778.5 mm = 30.64 inches.

error: (30.64-28.3)/28.8 * 100 = 8.3 %

(can someone check my math)

I have the original sticker for my 98 4 cyl. and it says as follows:

"Optional Equipment

AA Aluminum alloy wheels P265-75R15 w/wheel arch molding"

225/75/15. : : The speedo would be off somewhat: : : original: 225(0.75)*2 + 15(25.4) = 337.5 + 381 = 718.5 mm = 28.3 inches : : replacement: 265(0.75)*2 + 15(25.4) = 397.5 + 381 = 778.5 mm = 30.64 inches. : : error: (30.64-28.3)/28.8 * 100 = 8.3 % : : (can someone check my math) : : : vocal steve wrote: : : > Hey Folks... : >

Yeah believe me with the Sheriff Billy-Bobs we have here and their love of radar both moving and stationary, and my penchant to speed, if the speedo were off any great amount I would have found out by now.

It might be possible to get one of those little books that have retail/wholesale prices and available option packages to research it further. I only recall the P265s that came on it when I bought it new and I promptly shucked them off for the BFG Mudders.
