Toyota Tacoma Prerunner Frame Pad Squeak

My Prerunner has a squeaking noise coming from the underside that drives me nuts. It's done it since I bought it new. It took the dealership three attempts to finally pin it down. Turns out the frame pads are causing the problem. The squeak only occurs when traveling forward without depressing the break or the accelerator. It's weird. Anyway, I'm under the impression that all they did was tighten some bolts to help apply pressure to the frame pads. I don't want to pay them to do it now I'm out of warranty. Anyone out there know where the frame pads are? I have climbed under the truck and can't seem to figure it out. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm going out of my mind.

Toyota shouldn't have a problem warranting some outside of the 3/36 period if it is a re-occuring problem that was documented while still under warranty. Grab your receipt and have em fix it again. Correctly.

Did you ever find out how to fix it? I have the same problem with my truck. Thanks,

Still no luck. I even talked to the dealership that fixed it originly (on their 3rd attempt). They said that the original technician no longer worked there and their notes did not offer enough information to help me. I have asked alot of mechanics and technicians with no luck. I have even climed under it and tightened every bolt I can find and lubricated every bushing I could find....still squeaking. I'm at a loss.

This entire problem is ridiculous. What annoys me even more is that it was doing it under warranty and I never took it in. Just about the time the warranty expired it got REALLY bad! Thanks for your help, and good luck!

I've got the same problem now too in my '99 Prerunner. Have had the wheels off, brake pads checked, wheel bearings checked - all fine. Thinking it might be the differential, brought it into a rearend specialist (shortly after the noise stopped happening!) and he said it was likely not the differential, since those sounds don't come and go as mine were. He also checked the u-joints and said they looked fine.

The sound went away for about two weeks and then yesterday, came back again! I have no idea what to check next. I sometimes think it's a metal on metal sound, but if I had to make a guess I would say it could be rubber on metal too (a bushing or bed-related problem?).

Anyway, if anyone out there has ever actually got this problem solved, would love to hear what you found out! Thanks!

You might try checking the 6 bed bolts to see if they are still tight.

Just another comment that I've notices. This only happens to me when it's cold outside. During warm weather, there's no problem. However, in late fall and winter, it's out of control. It must have something to do with the colder temps. causing something to contract...perhaps a bushing that is expanding during the warmer months...still looking for a solution. I'll keep you posted if I find anything out.

add me to the list of 1999 prerunner owners with this very confusing problem...

I have only owned my toyota in cold weather so i can not say whether or not it happens in warm weather either. But it even makes the noise (off and on albeit) when I am sitting still in nuetral. Jazz Mann

I am only replying in order to add myself to the list. I apologize in that I don?t have a fix for this problem- I can only say what isn?t the problem. I own a ?99 4runner SR5 sport edition. I hear a high pitched squeaking noise everytime I accelerate to about 20+ mph and let it coast. I really only hear it when it is cold out and have tried everything to get it fixed. I have had it looked at a total of

4 times by two different mechanics. I had the alternator belt changed today and the noise was still there. It is driving me insane. My other mechanic also tightened every belt and inspected the truck from front to rear. He says the next option is to replace the timing belt and water pump- A huge and expensive job that I personally don?t think will fix the problem. If anyone has fixed this problem please let us know. Thanks.

Still nothing here. All I can say (or recomend) is "stop spending money under the hood," unless your having some sort of engine trouble. I did have this repaird once by a Land Cruiser Tech. It's deffinately coming from the belly of the truck...I'm just unable to find it nor can I find that Technician that has the solution. I just hate to see people spending money on the belts and other parts under the hood for this issue...assuming we are all experiencing the same problem that is.
