46hp or 60hp?

The September 2003 VWTrends says in at least two places in their History of the Super Beetle article that the 1971 Super Beetle had a 1600cc, 60 hp engine. I thought the 1973 SB 1600cc engine's hp was more in the neighborhood of 46hp.

How many hp did the 1600cc dual port engine have in the 1971 SB? How about in the 1973 SB?

Did they de-tune to meet emissions standards and lose 14 hp? Seems a little severe.

What's up?

Thanks, Dan '73 SB

Depends on how the number of HP is arrived at...................there are many systems......................the US always uses a system that yields a larger number..................LOL

I always understood it to be 60hp.............in both. when they went ot fuel injected, it went down............... that should at least start the answers to the last two questions.
