'74 Swing Axel Wheel Bearings

Just about to do wheel bearings on the beetle and need to clarify one point. Haynes says that the large O ring goes over the bearing, when seated. Rob & Dave suggest large O ring goes into cover plate. I would guess that the end result is the same, but which if any, is likely to be more successful ?

Also, any other gotchas ? I seem to have two paper gaskets in the kit, both the same.

Yes, over the bearing, the part that sticks out after being pressed into the bore. When the backing plate is bolted on, the O-ring winds up being "in" the cover plate hole.

See the Mechanical section of my web site for a How-To article.

Ah, that might be the reason I had some difficulties putting the O-ring on. I even made a mold to press the ring into the cover plate...

Yep, learning all the time... ;)Roger

You only use one of the paper gaskets. The other is for vehicles with reduction boxes.

Thanks for answering my next question.... :-)
